823 Campaign Badge of Honor

The 823 Campaign Badge of Honor commemorates those soldiers who participated in the campaign to protect the Quemoy and Matsu Islands in August of 1958. The numbers “8-2-3” refer to the date of August 23rd. In Chinese culture, historical events are often referred to by the dates on which they took place and, thus, Chinese people understand implicitly that “823” refers to the Quemoy Matsu campaign.

The medal is 3.5 centimeters in diameter, silver in color, with an engraving of the two islands located in the center. Also depicted upon the medal are fighter planes, battleships, and cannons, which symbolize the cooperation in this battle between all branches of the armed forces.

This is a joint service medal available to both ROC and US forces who participated in the campaign.
