ANNIVERSARY
By Chuck Lapsley
The reunion this year at San Antonio Texas was a great
success. Over 120 members of the five batteries and the
178
th
Ordnance and their families enjoyed the events and
activities centering around the Clarion Hotel. The Clarion
was conveniently located at the beginning of the renowned
“Riverwalk” with water taxi access to downtown.
A sizeable contingent arrived in San Antonio earlier in the
week ahead of the main body of members. Groups of early
arrivals got together Wednesday evening for dinner at some
of the many restaurants.
The early morning Board of Governors meeting on
Thursday was followed by registration from noon until five
o’clock in the afternoon. Among the issues on the agenda,
four major items of importance discussed at the board
meeting that were presented to the general membership
included:
Four potential sites for the 2006 Reunion
Branson, MO
Rapid City, SD
Washington, DC
Las Vegas, NV
Retirement of two of the seven directors to emeritus status
Frank Serpico
Sam Grant
Election of two new directors
Search for troops and membership
We currently have 136 Members, 148 Non-member and
have not been able to find 300 troops.
Photos of what we looked like during our tour on Taiwan
were put on the nametags, which helped to stimulate our
recollections. They were much appreciated.
Thursday evening events included an informal reception
and buffet in the Santa Fe room where Bob Mackintosh
welcomed all to the reunion. We all took the opportunity to
renew acquaintances and old friendships.
Friday started with a general membership meeting, where
a vote of the general membership was taken to select the
location of the 2006 reunion. Four sites were discussed, with
the South Dakota site being the winner.
Two Board of Directors were retired by the members of the
board and five nominations for the two openings were made
by the members including: Thomas Conniff of D & Hq
Battery, Ray Corbin of B & D Battery, S.B. Davis of D
Battery and James Telford of A Battery.
Ray Corbin and S.B. Davis were elected by secret ballot
by the membership at the meeting.
In the afternoon, a
Taiwan Badge Cer-
emony was held to
present Mutual Defense
Commemorative
Badges and 8-23 Badge
of Honor medals not
previously presented to
the members.
Councilman Richard
Perez (Mayor Pro-tem)
