On 15 August 1959, the 2nd Missile Battalion, 71st Artil-
lery (Nike Hercules) turned over their equipment to the
1st Guided Missile Battalion (Nike Hercules), Republic of
China (ROC). Most of the ROC troops had been trained
on-site by members of 2-71 (and support units), while the
officers and some enlisted personnel were trained back in the
U.S.
This same day, the unit was deactivated. Most of the
battalion returned to CONUS on the USS General J.C.
Breckenridge. A small contingent remained on Taiwan as
members of the U.S. Army MAAG to be advisors to the
ROC 1st Guided Missile Battalion (Nike Hercules),
The battalionTransfer of Command photo (to the right)
is from the ROC archives. The ROC battalion commander
was Col. Chang; the U.S. battalion commander was
LTC Archie Walker.
