bullet-shaped "Explorer" circles the Earth every 118 minutes, its

"Explorer" is the U.S. version of the Soviet Union's "Sputnik" and was
made possible by a 3-way collaboration between scientists, the
military and private industry.

a statement stressing the fact that the problems they encountered were
incited by a minority. Half a million people turn out to cheer the
motorcade to the White House.

Launched from Cape Canaveral, a giant Atlas ICBM soars aloft. It is
the largest satellite yet evolved, with its 800 lb. bulk more than
double the mass of Russia's Sputnik III, and the first one ever
self-guided into orbit. Using its revolutionary new space
communications system which enables it to receive messages from earth
and rebroadcast them, it sends President Eisenhower's goodwill
greeting to the world.
