At Cape Canaveral, Florida, the Army's Jupiter-C rocket is fired launching America's first artificial satellite into space. The bullet-shaped "Explorer" circles the Earth every 118 minutes, its 30-pound bulk crammed with automated scientific observation gear. "Explorer" is the U.S. version of the Soviet Union's "Sputnik" and was made possible by a 3-way collaboration between scientists, the military and private industry.

The United Arab Republic comes into being with the formal merger of Egypt and Syria, hailed by crowds in Damascus and Cairo, as the rest of the Middle East and the outside world ponder the significance of the epochal events.

Vice President Nixon and his wife are subjected to a series of Communist inspired anti-U.S. demonstrations during their Latin American tour culminating in mob violence in Venezuela in which stones and clubs are hurled, smashing their car windows. On their arrival back in Washington D.C. President Eisenhower meets them to congratulate their deportment in a difficult situation and Nixon makes a statement stressing the fact that the problems they encountered were incited by a minority. Half a million people turn out to cheer the motorcade to the White House.

A general strike by French settlers in Algeria and mob rioting protesting the proposed Pflimin government culminates in an Army coup. A junta led by General Jacques Massu seizes power and calls on the long silent General Charles De Gaulle to take over the leadership of France.

Awaiting only a territorial plebiscite to become the nation's 49th and largest State, Alaska goes all out to celebrate with enthusiasm that recalls goldrush days.

The America's Cup Race is resumed after 21 years, with the U.S. yacht Columbia easily outdistancing the British challenger Sceptre. The West Coast gains two baseball teams as the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers become the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Using its revolutionary new space communications system which enables it to receive messages from earth and rebroadcast them, it sends President Eisenhower's goodwill greeting to the world.
