Prior to the 2nd Missile Battalion 71st Artillery deployment in 1958 to Taiwan there was an active Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) presence in Taipei.  Also when the 2-71 was deactivated and sent home in 1959 many of its members transferred to this MAAG to continue support of the training of the 1st Taiwanese Missile Battalion who took over operation of the Nike Hercules missiles.

Some of the MAAG group in Hsinchu included Air Force people that flew the F-86's at the CAF air base in Hsinchu, and were Korean veterans.

One of the individuals assigned to this MAAG was Lieutenant Colonel Roy Rayle (pronounced Rail) who developed the M-14 Rifle and the M-79 Grenade Launcher while stationed at the Springfield Armory in the 1953 -1957 time frame.  His next assignment was to the MAAG group on Taiwan.

He brought his family with him which included an 11 year old son named Bruce who contacted us and has shared some photos he inherited from his father.  Most of the 2-71 members who did any sightseeing while we were deployed will likely find these photos will bring back some memories.

You can contact Bruce by email.
